The American Health Council has cordially appointed Dr. Sondra Adkinson, BSPh, PharmD to its prestigious Industry Board. Working in the healthcare industry for over 38 years, Dr. Adkinson is a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in the field of Pain Management and possesses an exceptional passion for her patients and bidirectional education.
Dr. Adkinson completed her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (BSPH) in 1980 at the Ohio Northern University. Following on from this achievement, she decided to continue her studies at the Nova Southeastern University (NSU), achieving her Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) in 1998. Dr. Adkinson has also gone on to become a Certified Pain Educator (CPE) and Diplomate Academy Integrative Pain Management (AIPM).
Dr. Adkinson has been in her current role at Bay Pines VA Healthcare System for 20 years. Originally opened in 1933, The Bay Pines VA Healthcare System is a level 1a, tertiary care facility headquartered in Bay Pines, Florida. Every year, the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System serves more than 108,000 Veterans while providing a full range of high quality medical, psychiatric, and extended care services in outpatient, inpatient, residential, nursing home, and home care settings.
Dr. Adkinson feels incredibly fortunate that her role in pharmacy enables her to not only serve people but to also collaborate with healthcare professionals to give the very best care possible. On a daily basis, Dr. Adkinson works in an outpatient interdisciplinary pain clinic with an advanced scope of practice, enabling her to work closely within a team of three Interventional Pain Specialists, including an ARNP, a Psychiatrist, a Psychologist, Acupuncturist, Chiropractor, Physical Therapist and RN Care Coordinator. As part of role, she authorized through collaborative practice agreements to prescribe and monitor pain related pharmacotherapy, provide medication histories, opioid dosing or tapering and initiate naloxone nasal kits for opioid overdose prevention as well as educational roles in group medical appointments. It is Dr. Adkinson’ s aim to streamline and optimize pharmacotherapy to improve patient outcomes and to support an integrated whole health pain plan of care.
Throughout the course of her career, Dr. Adkinson has also been successful in receiving many professional accomplishments including becoming a Florida Licensed Consultant Pharmacist and a Florida Registered Pharmacist, Ohio Registered Pharmacist. Alongside this and her role at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System, Dr. Adkinson also serves as a Preceptor/Adjunct Professor for APPE elective pain rotations for various Colleges of Pharmacy.
To broaden her knowledge in her field, Dr. Adkinson remains a part of numerous professional associations. These include The American Pharmacists Association (APhA), the American Society of Health-Care Pharmacists (ASHP) and the Florida Pharmacists Association. She is also a member of the American Society of Pain Educators (ASPE), the American Pain Society (APS) and the Academy of Integrative Pain Management (AIPM) and is a Lifetime Member of the National Rifle Association (NRA).
Dr. Adkinson has also had the honor of becoming a DAIPM – Diplomate of the Academy of Integrative Pain Management & CPE- Certified Pain Educator by examination. In 2012, Dr. Adkinson had the privileged to be named the Pain Educator of the Year and as a further acknowledgment to her accomplishments, she was appointed by HHS Secretary Azar in Washington D.C. to serve on the HHS Best Practices Pain Management Interagency Task Force.
Looking to the future, Dr. Adkinson hopes to focus on achieving Provider status for pharmacists, as well as the reimbursement of their services as a member of the healthcare team, providing disease state management, medication management, counseling, immunization, point of care testing, pharmacogenomics driven individualized dosing and monitoring of pharmacotherapy, from insurance companies to Medicare and Medicaid to private pay.
Away from work, Dr. Adkinson spends her time helping charitable organizations with campaigns such as Go Red for Women’s Heart Health, Walk for Life Fundraisers and Breast Cancer Awareness. She also enjoys partaking in volunteering at her local Church and has served on the School Board and Personnel Committee.
