The American Health Council has cordially appointed Ms. Sonja Highum to its prestigious Nursing Board, in recognition of almost three decades spent serving the nursing industry.
Ms. Highum first became involved in her profession due to her love of science. This drove her to seek out nursing, which she decided would be the perfect fit for her. Ms. Highum studied for her BSN in Nursing at Loyolla University, and her MS at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 2002. She also holds LSN and RN certifications.
Ms. Highum is currently employed as a Licensed School Nurse at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton School District, a role she has held for the past ten years. Janesville-Waldorf – Pemberton School District serves almost 600 students in one K-12 facility located in Janesville, MN. The staff at Janesville Waldorf – Pemberton work extremely hard to provide high levels of learning for all students, and have committed to implementing best practice and authentic use of technology to enhance the learning experience for all students. The facility offers a free and reduced lunch program which serves 28% of their students, while 17% of students qualify for and receive special education services. Major services provided include education, healthcare, continued learning, counseling, teaching and community outreach.
On a day-to-day basis, Ms. Highum works as the only licensed School Nurse in the school district. She is responsible for administration, healthcare plans, daily operations and seeing diabetic and asthmatic patients.
With 28 years of experience within the healthcare industry, Ms. Highum attributes her success to her college professors who encouraged her to become a critical thinker and pursue a career within the field of nursing. Her parents have also shown her great support and continue to keep her motivated and determined. Ms. Highum holds extensive expertise in diabetes, nursing, patient care, education, carbohydrate learning to children and medication education.
Among her professional accomplishments, Ms. Highum includes being an educator at a Diabetic Camp, Camp Sweet Life. She also teaches patients to get comfortable with pumps. Ms. Highum is a member of a number of professional associations including ANSN, the American Health Council and the School Nurses of Minnesota. Ms. Highum also teaches an NCLEX review course for Kaplan.
Ms. Highum’s goals over the next five years include challenging herself and becoming more involved with cystic fibrosis. Ms. Highum would also like to become involved with the state organization.
In her spare time, Ms. Highum enjoys staying active by working on her fitness and running. She loves spending time with her family, including her husband of 26 years who is a podiatrist, and her three children. She also works with the charitable organizations Camp Sweet Life.
