The American Health Council has proudly appointed Tonyia Seeland MS, PA-C, to its prestigious Physician Board in recognition of her outstanding contributions in the capacity of Physician Assistant over the course of her impressive career.
Ms. Seeland has always possessed an interest in the field of health, and this led her to study for a Bachelor of Science in Health Education from Michigan State University, successfully graduating in 1990. During her time at undergraduate school, Ms. Seeland had the opportunity to work with a physician assistant and this sparked a keen interest in her to pursue the role in the future. She continued her studies at Oakland University, obtaining her Master of Science degree in Exercise Science in 1995, before then embarking on her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies at the University of Detroit Mercy, which she completed in 1999.
Having enjoyed a successful career spanning two decades, Ms. Seeland currently works at Michigan Medicine, a role she has upheld for 19 years, specializing in Reconstruction and Plastic Surgery. Michigan Medicine is home to one of the largest health care complexes in the world. It has been the site of many groundbreaking medical and technological advancements since the Medical School first opened in 1850. Michigan Medicine is currently ranked No.5 on 2018-19 U.S. News and World Report Best Hospitals Honor Roll and offers a wide range of healthcare services including Anesthesiology, Cardiac Surgery, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurology, OB/GYN, Pathology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiology, and Urology.
On a day-to-day basis, Ms. Seeland performs minimally invasive procedures such as Botox and temporary fillers and prescribes medical treatment for aging skin. In addition, Ms. Seeland works with patients who have skin conditions, scaring and minor skin imperfections, chronic migraines and hyperhidrosis of the hand, achilleas and feet. Over the past four years Ms. Seeland has focused on expanding her expertise in the field Hematology/Oncology, to add to her 11 year experience in cosmetic minimally invasive procedures and her 14 year experience in plastic surgery. This means that she also now manages patient care after reconstruction for trauma, cancer, chronic wounds and/or congenital causes.
Looking back at her successful career to date, Ms. Seeland attributes her achievements to her continuous self-reflection, determination and hard work as well as valuable guidance from her mentors and teachers. For the past 14 years, Ms. Seeland has had the immense privilege of working with world renowned Professor and Surgeon, Paul S. Cederna, who is her supervising physician and the Department Chair of Plastic Surgery.
Keen to help inspire the next generation of physician assistants, Ms. Seeland lectures at the Eastern Michigan University Physician Assistant Program and also assists with PA candidate interviews. In addition, Ms. Seeland is a Scholar of the PASQUAL (Patient Safety and Quality Leadership) program at Michigan Medicine and an active member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA).
Looking to the future, Ms. Seeland plans to continue working towards establishing herself as a contributor and leader, to help ensure that the PA profession is incorporated into integral aspects of health care at Michigan Medicine and beyond. She also plans to continue building her involvement in the Continuous Improvement Process, specifically in the area of Quality and Safety at Michigan Medicine, as well as remain a valuable resource for providers regarding the use and development of their electronic medical record system. Furthermore, Ms. Seeland plans to grow the minimally invasive procedures program in plastic surgery.
Outside of work, Ms. Seeland likes to remain active, successfully completing the Dexter to Ann Arbor half marathon in 2015. She enjoys spending quality time with her husband, children and the family dog, Bailey. Ms. Seeland keeps her mind and body healthy by maintaining a regular fitness program which includes running and weight training. She likes to read for both pleasure and personal growth, and volunteers her time to the charity Feed My Starving Children as well as various church activities.
